Every weld, test and certificate on record, from fabrication to commissioning

For a contractor that fabricates and installs industrial piping, we built the system behind their quality records. It tracks every weld on every pipe spool: who welded it, how it was tested, and which certified material went into it.

The situation

On a piping project, the quality team has to show that every weld followed the right procedure, was made by a qualified welder, passed its tests, and used certified material. The client already kept these records in a database. They needed a secure, modern system that their QA/QC applications could use to read and update those records, with each client company’s data kept separate.

What we built

  • Projects and sitesWith dates and hours for prefabrication, installation and commissioning.
  • Isometric drawings and pipe spoolsWith every weld on them.
  • Each weld’s detailsNumber and type, welding procedure (WPS), fit-up and welding dates, the welders, diameter, filler wire, heat treatment, repairs and visual inspection.
  • Non-destructive testing for each weldMethod, report, result and any defects, before and after heat treatment.
  • Welders and their companies
  • Material certificatesWith heat number, piping class, wall thickness and test values, and the certificate PDF attached.
  • Secure loginsWith each client company’s data in its own database.
  • Automated testsSo changes don’t break the records the quality team depends on.

Our part was the back end: the system that stores and checks the records. It works with the client’s existing database, and their own applications connect to it.

What changed

A weld’s full history, from fit-up to its last test, is in one place, linked to the welders who made it and the material it’s made from.

Which records does your team still keep by hand?

We’ll work out which ones to move first.
